    The U-431 German VII-C class submarine
    North of Algiers 1943

The U-431 was one of the successiful VII-C class German submarines: she was built in Danzig by F. Schichau, during 1940, and launched during 1941.

The submarines of the VII-C class were 67.10m long; displacement 769 tons (surfaced) 871 tons (submerged); max speed 17.7kn (surfaced) 7.5kn (submerged); five 533mm torpedo launchers; one 88mm gun, plus one or two 20mm or one 37mm machine gun. They were designed to dive down to -220m.

The U-431 sank 12 enemy ships in 16 missions, totalling 20000 tons.

On November 3, 1942, the U-431 was attacked by an Allied aircraft and severely damaged.
Just a few days later, on November 13, 1942, she torpedoed and sank the Dutch destroyer HNMS Isaac Sweers off Algiers.

On October 21, 1943, when she was cruising off Algiers, the U-431 was spotted and depth charged by a British Vickers Wellington bomber.
The U-431 sank with all hands at 37°23'N, 0°35'W.

The British submarine HMS Ultimatum attacked a German submarine South-East of Toulon (France) on October 31, 1943. The British Commander reported she was the U-431, thinking to have sunk her. 
But the submarine was, in fact, the U-73, that escaped with no damages.
