    The U-443 German VII-C class submarine
    off Algiers 1943

The U-443 was one of the successiful VII-C class German submarines: she was built in Danzig by F.Schichau during 1941, and launched during 1942.

The submarines of the VII-C class were 67.10m long; displacement 769 tons (surfaced) 871 tons (submerged); max speed 17.7kn (surfaced) 7.5kn (submerged); five 533mm torpedo launchers; one 88mm gun, plus one or two 20mm or one 37mm machine gun. They were designed to dive down to -220m.

The U-443 sank four enemy ships in three missions, totalling 21000 tons.

During December 11, 1942, she torpedoed and sank the British destroyer HMS Blean off Oran.

On February 23, 1943, when she was cruising just off Algiers, the U-443 was spotted by three British destroyers, the HMS Lamerton, the HMS Wheatland and the HMS Bicester.
The destroyers attacked the German submarine lunching a pattern of depth charges.
The U-443 was hit and sank at 36°55'N, 2°25'E. 

Il 23 Febbraio 1943, mentre stava incrociando al largo di Algeri, l' U-443 fu localizzato da tre cacciatorpediniere Britannici, l' HMS Lamerton, l' HMS Wheatland e l' HMS Bicester.
I cacciatorpediniere attaccarono il sommergibile Tedesco con bombe di profondità.
L' U-443 fu colpito, ed affondò a 36°55'N, 2°25'E.

No man of the 48 crew survived.
