    The U-331 German VII-C class submarine
    North of Algiers 1942

The U-331 was one of the successiful VII-C class German submarines: she was built in Emden by Nordseewerke during 1940, and launched during 1941.

The submarines of the VII-C class were 67.10m long; displacement 769 tons (surfaced) 871 tons (submerged); max speed 17.7kn (surfaced) 7.5kn (submerged); five 533mm torpedo launchers; one 88mm gun, plus one or two 20mm or one 37mm machine gun. They were designed to dive down to -220m.

The U-331 sank two enemy ships in ten missions, totalling 40000 tons.

On November 17, 1941, the U-331 landed eight commandos at Ras Gebeisa (Egypt): they tried to sabotate the railway, but the mission failed.
Just a week later, on November 25, the U-331 torpedoed and sank the British battleship HMS Barham North of Sollum (Egypt).

On November 17, 1942, when she was cruising North of Algiers, the U-331 was attacked by a British Lockheed A 28 Hanson anti-submarine bomber.
The U-331 was seriously damaged by depth charges, then surfaced and signalled surrender. 
But in the same moment, a British torpedo-bomber Fairey Albacore from the carrier HMS Formidable torpedoed the German submarine.
