This beautiful and outstanding Museum was founded during 1863 by King Louis I, he himself a warship Commander, near the place where the famous explorer Vasco the Gama set sail to India, in 1497. 

Questo bellissimo e straordinario Museo fu fondato nel 1863 da Re Luigi I, egli stesso Comandante di una nave da guerra, presso il luogo dal quale il grande navigatore Vasco de Gama partì per il suo viaggio verso l'India nel 1497.

An entire hall is dedicated to the history of explorations, and among the most interesting objects there are: a padrao, a kind of column that was rised by Portuguese explorers in each new land they discovered, to testify their presence and the property of the King of Portugal; and a wooden statue of St.Raphael belonged to Vasco de Gama. 

Un' intera sala è dedicata alla storia delle esplorazioni, e tra gli oggetti più interessanti si possono vedere: un padrao, una specie di colonna innalzata dai Portoghesi in ogni nuova terra da loro scoperta, a testimoniere la presenza e la proprietà del Re del Portogallo; ed una statua lignea raffigurante San Raffaele, appartenura a Vasco de Gama.

The extraordinary collections of the Museu de Marinha include also beautiful ship models, sail boats, figure-heads, maps, drawings, guns and weapons, uniforms, reconstructions of oceanographic ship interiors and three historical seaplanes; the beautiful collection of astrolabes is probably the largest in the world, and is completed by a wide variety of navigation instruments. Three entire halls are dedicated to an extraordinary collection of traditional fishing-boat models.

Le straordinarie collezioni del Museu de marinha comprendono inoltre bellissimi modelli navali, imbarcazioni a vela, polene, mappe, cannoni ed armi, uniformi, ricostruzioni di interni di navi oceanografiche, e tre idrovolanti storici; la bellissima collezione di astrolabi è probabilmente la piu grande al mondo, ed è completata da una grande varietà di strumenti di navigazione. Tre intere sale sono dedicate a una straordinaria collezione di modelli di imbarcazioni da pesca tradizionali.
