                Naval Museum of Crete - Chania

                Fortress of Firka, Chania (Kriti)
                Opened 10 to 12.30 and 15.00 to 18.00

The Museum is dedicated to the maritime traditions of Crete, and it is hosted in the Fortress of Firka, built by the Venetians to protect the harbour. The most interesting section includes many models of ancient ships: the "Minoan Ship", a typical vessel of the Copper Age; the bireme of the VI Century B.C.; the Athenian trireme, a light warship; the Cyrene trade vessel (III Century B.C.); a II Century B.C. Roman trireme; a Venetian galley; and a beautiful model of the Battleship Averoff, presently a museum-ship. 

Il Museo è dedicato alle tradizioni marinare di Creta, ed è ospitato nella Fortezza di Firka, costruita dai Veneziani per proteggere il porto. La sezione più interessante include molti modelli di navi antiche: la "Nave Minoica", una tipica imbarcazione dall'Età del Rame; la bireme del VI Secolo A.C.; la trireme Ateniese, una nave da guerra leggera; la nave commerciale di Cirene (III Secolo A.C.); una trireme Romana del II Secolo A.C.; una galera Veneziana; ed un magnifico modello della corazzata Averoff, che oggi è una nave-museo.

The Museum is completed by a Library, an Archive and a rich shell collection. 
Some naval weapons and a propeller are exposed in the frontyard, facing the picturesque harbour and the Turkish minaret-shaped lighthouse.

Il Museo è completato da una Biblioteca, un Archivio e una ricca collezione di conchiglie.
Alcune armi navali e un'elica sono esposte nel cortile prospicente la Fortezza, fronteggiando il pittoresco porto e il faro Turco a forma di minareto.
