...I remember the time I spent in the sweet islands of Dalmatia: I was fascinated by the variety of names the old fishermen used to indicate the different fishes: many names, even in a language so different from mine, were in some way familiar to me.

...mi ricordo il tempo che ho trascorso nelle dolci isole della Dalmazia: ero affascinato dalla varietà di nomi che i vecchi pescatori usavano per indicare le differenti specie di pesci: molti nomi, anche in una lingua così diversa dalla mia, mi erano in qualche modo familiari.

Since then I began to collect the names of fishes in all Mediterranean languages, and these pages are the results of my research: as you can observe, some species of great commercial importance have different names to indicate male and female specimens, the juveniles and even the pregnant females. The lower the interest, the fewer the names; the same name can even indicate different species with no fishing iportance.

Da allora ho cominciato a raccogliere i nomi dei pesci nelle lingue Mediterranee, e queste pagine sono il risultato della mia ricerca: come si può osservare, certe specie di grande importanza commerciale hanno nomi diversi per indicare l'esemplare maschio e la femmina, il giovane e addirittura la femmina incinta. Minore l'interesse, meno numerosi i nomi: lo stesso nome può indicare addirittura specie differenti senza interesse per la pesca.

You can note also that the names given to the same Species are often similar in very far Countries: the Mediterranean Sea was always a trait d'union, a mean of communication between different peoples and cultures, instead than a boundary.

Si può notare anche che i nomi di una stessa specie sono spesso simili in Paesi molto lontani tra loro: il Mediterraneo è sempre stato una casa comune, una via di comunicazione tra differenti Popoli e Culture piuttosto che un confine.

A few Centuries ago the sabir, a free language made from Venetian, Greek and Arab elements, was commonly spoken and understood in all Mediterranean harbors and area: the vernacular names of the Mediterranean fishes seem to be one of the legacies of that ancient culture.

Pochi Secoli fa il sabir, una lingua franca composta di elementi Veneziani, Greci ed Arabi, era comunemente parlata e compresa in tutti i porti dell'area del Mediterraneo: i nomi vernacolari dei pesci sembrano essere una delle eredità di quell'antica cultura.
