Cutleria multifida (Smith) Greville.  (15cm)     

The gametophyte (see picture) can be found during winter and spring on rocks and stones in sheltered stations, like small bays an harbours, in shallow waters down to -2m. The aspect resembles that of Taonia atomaria, but the section of the thallus is oval and less flattened and the extremities show characteristic tufts of hairs.  
The sporophyte ("Aglaozonia parvula") thick and adherent to the substrate, is present year round in shallow and sheltered stations. 
Diffused in Mediterranean and North-Eastern Atlantic (from Scandinavia to Morocco).

Il gametofito (vedi illustrazione) si può trovare durante l'inverno e la primanera su rocce e sassi in stazioni riparate, come piccole baie e porticcioli, a profondità non superiori a -2m. L'aspetto ricorda quello di Taonia atomaria, ma la sezione del tallo è ovale e meno appiattito, e le estremità presentano caratteristici ciuffi di filamenti.
Lo sporofito ("Aglaozonia parvula"), è spesso e aderente al substrato, ed è presente tutto l'anno in stazioni superficiali e riparate.
Diffusa in Mediterraneo e Atlantico Nord-orientale (Dalla Scandinavia al Marocco)

   
Cutleria adspersa (Mertens ex Roth) de Notaris.  (8cm)     

The gametophyte (see picture), green-brown, has a flat and rounded or radially cut thallus, with hairy margin. Present during winter and spring on rocks at low depht, down to 5m. The aspect resembles young specimens of Zanardinia prototypus but the thallus is more adherent to the substrate.
The sporophyte ("Aglaozonia melanoidea") black and encrusting, can be found year round on vertical, shaded rocks in shallow waters. 
Diffused in Mediterranean, North-Eastern Atlantic (from Brittany to Morocco), Black Sea.

Il gametofito (vedi illustrazione) è verde-marrone, e presenta un tallo arrotondato o tagliato radialmente, con margini provvisti di filamenti: Si trova in inverno e primavera su rocce a bassa profondità, fino a -5m. L'aspetto ricorda gli esemplari givanili di Zanardinia prototypus, ma il tallo è più aderente al substrato. Lo sporofito ("Aglaozonia melanoidea") è nero e incrostante, e si rinviene tutto l'anno su rocce verticali ed ombreggiate in acque superficiali.
Diffusa in Mediterraneo, Atlantico Nord-orientale (dalla Bretagna al Marocco) e Mar Nero.

   
Zanardinia prototypus (Nardo) Nardo. (12cm)       

The thallus of joung specimens is green-brown, transparent, rounded, from 4 to 8cm in diameter: possible confusion with Cutleria adspersa, but the part adhering to the substrate is thinner and the colonized environment is deeper. Older specimens (see picture), up to 20cm, are almost black, thick, and with irregular margin ("old-leather-like"). Found from -10 down to -50m on irregular sediments, year round. 
Diffused in Mediterranean, Black Sea, North-Eastern Atlantic (from British Islands to Morocco).

Il tallo degli esemplari giovanili è verde-marrone, trasparente, arrotondato, con un diametro da 4 a 8cm: si può confondere con Cutleria adspersa, ma la parte aderenre al substrato è più sottile, e l'ambiente colonizzato è più profondo. Gli esemplari più vecchi (vedi illustrazione) alti fino a 20cm, somo pressochè neri, spessi, e con margini irregolari (aspetto "di cuoio vecchio"). Si trova tutto l'anno tra -10 e -50m, su sedimenti irregolari.
Diffusa in Mediterraneo, Mar Nero, Atlantico Nord-orientale (dalle Isole Britanniche al Marocco).
