The Roman iron anchors showed an evolution in their shape: the
different types were
described and classified by G.Kapitan (1982)
I - Republican Age. II - Early Imperial Age. III -
Imperial Age. IV - Late Imperial Age and Byzantine Age.
V - Late Byzantine Age and Arab Age.

Le ancore Romane mostrano un'evoluzione di forme nel corso del tempo:

- Tarda Età Imperiale e Età Bizantina. V - Tarda Età Bizantina ed Età
Araba.
Iron anchor with straight flukes - Republican Age
A Roman iron anchor from a trade vessel sunk near Montecristo Island (Italy)
during the third Century B.C. It is about 2.5m long.
The shape is in some
way archaic, resembling the wooden models.
Ancora in
ferro con marre diritte - Età Repubblicana
Un'ancora Romana in ferro trovata presso il relitto di una nave
commerciale affondata presso l'Isola di Montecristo nel corso del III
Secolo A.C. E' lunga circa 2.5m.
Notare come la forma sia in qualche modo arcaica, simile a quella delle
ancore in legno.
Iron anchor with curved flukes - Imperial Age
A large Roman iron anchor recovered together with three others from a
trade vessel sunk near Marina di Sorso (Italy) between the end of the
first and the beginning of the second Century A.D.
The shape is
surprisingly modern.
Ancora in
ferro con marre curve - Età Imperiale
Una grande ancora Romana in ferro, recuperata insieme ad altre tre dal
relitto di una nave commerciale affondata presso Marina di Sorso, tra la
fine del I e l'inizio del II Secolo D.C.
La forma è sorprendentemente moderna.
